Are You Normal? (repost)
Governer of New Jersey, James Mcgreevey, resigned. In his resignation speech he announced that he was gay... yup, the governer. It turns out that he is married and had an affair with another man and as a result, the resignation followed.
I understand that some people have deeply ingrained traditions that predispose them to a fear of gays, among other things, but minds have the ability to change; the brain is malleable, as they say. Of course there is the mind of the religous fundamentalist, one of whom I'm not sure the term "malleable" applies. Some just feel like homosexuality isn't natural... there can be no propagation of species through homosexuality. To this I would ask what is natural, what it is to be natural. For thousands of years there have been heterosexuals; for thousands of years there have been homosexuals. It is true that we notice patterns in our environments and witness the progressive cycle of the seasons, all the while considering these patterns to be an indicator of what is normal, or natural.
This perception of "normalness" is very limited, considering the span of time and how little of it we occupy. There was a time, and still is in some places, when slavery was "normal", and natural in this sense. Things change. What is normal one second is strange the next, depending on who you're talking to. This rock that we live on is one of billions that will go through it's own "natural" cycle of birth and death.
Then, there's humans, with an ability to reason far beyond any other species. We create layers and layers of moral fabric suited to our genetic makeup and environment. 6 billion people, and some just happen to have feelings for members of their own sex. Of all the crazy shit that happens in this world, I could think of about seven hundred thousand things that are more of a threat to society. Gays don't promote inequality and don't seek to destroy values of equality. It would seem that others do.
