2005--Metamorphoses--2006

Tip to Dr. Rose for the image

I know-- a bit late with this one. Starting the new year, already behind.

*A quick note about 'thezenfly':

TheZenFly is by no means a Zen Master.

One might recall from an earlier post the story of Buyankasha's horrid encounter with swarms of biting flies. This was the fork in the road. The catalyst for change. The beginning of metamorphosis. Never before had Buyankasha encountered such a situation. TheZenFly is still haunted with the swell of unwanted anxiety at the mere thought of flies, and has since become engaged in many in-house wars with these creatures. It's as if flies were sent on a mission to annoy TheZenFly to the point of insanity, like a repeating tap on the forehead, accompanied by taunting and maniacal laughter.

So Buyankasha thought to himself, "Why not become the fly? That'll fucking show them. Ahh, but wait-- this is a humble venture. Personal therapy, not revenge."

TheZenFly was born.

As the new year dawns (dawned?), TheZenFly is increasingly sceptical, and finds it hard to reconcile the television with reality. After watching The Exorcism of Emily Rose, TheZenFly thought about how many people would see that movie and be persuaded to believe the accuracy of the events portrayed-- after all, it was 'based on a true story'. This was a great marketing tactic, one so full of utter bullshit that the proclaimed 'basis' for this film was a rather loose one, and one that I'm sure deluded a whole bunch of people into seriously considering the reality of an furry-tailed character named Lucifer (if the 'devil' is real, it's gotta have a furry tail. Goddamnitt.) But this isn't a movie review. I've just been thinking about how certain forms of advertising tend to take the humanity out of some people (read: compassion, caring, understanding, humility, and the like). I get the feeling that everything is a part of the market, and many individuals could care less about helping someone else if there's nothing to gain from the matter (speaking generally, of course-- some will consider the old adage that there's no such thing as a selfless act. This may be true, but it should be easy enough to agree that some acts are more or less selfless/selfish than others).

TheZenFly hopes to cultivate some humanity this year. I know-- high hopes. This can be difficult when the driver in front of you (assuming your driving, of course) insists on forgetting the fact that they have a goddamned blinker. Or when the price of bottled water continues to rise. Or when junk mail continues to accumulate in various open spaces, not to mention clogging the paper-shredder, causing it to make a loud and obnoxious mechanical sound of teeth-gnashing metal, choking on credit card applications.

Dwelling on absurdities is rather simple, and TheZenFly seeks to challenge himself-- despite certain misanthropic tendencies.

So with that, Happy New Year! May the fresh start give us the opportunity to move forward with a positive and open perspective.
