Why?

In five minutes the verdict in the Scott Peterson case will be announced.

Can someone please tell me why the news media has been so fixated on this case. I've been consciously avoiding it until now for the sole reason that I could never understand why some people are so concerned, as if there isn't anything better to report on. I know the charges are horrible, but why has this case been afforded so much coverage? I just don't get it -- am I missing something?

Ten minutes has passed and still no answer... god I hate my tv.
