Family Fun
So, in the midst of this sinus hell I managed to go on a little trip with the girlfriend and her extended family up north to the lakes and the woods (not lake of the woods). The first night, political preferences of most everyone there came about through the medium of campfires and beer. The girlfriend, adament as she is at times, ended up surrounded by a wall of THE dub's supporters while I rested with my hit-in-the-face-with-a-sledgehammer sinus predicament. Here are some recountings of that situation:
Relative: "The economy is doing great! Tell me, don't you worry about terraism?"
Other Relative: "It's all of these muslims and blacks, we need to close up our borders, those turbanheads need to go."
Girlfriend: "That's a very racist thing to say, you guys are horrible."
Snip
Girlfriend: "I know you all have different values from me, but why shouldn't a gay man or woman be able to get married if they love each other?"
Relative: "I don't think that's morally proper"
Other relative: "It's a mental dysfunction!"
Snip
Apparently the conversation came to a close after numerous similar comments about how Bush will be the one to uphold their values, the girlfriend told them they were acting like Nazis and she left. The Nazi thing isn't necessarily a view that I would subscribe to, but something had to be said; "turbanheads" and "mental dysfunction" are terms in my opinion that only further fan the flames of hate... all of these people are devout dub supporters. Coincidence?
The rest of the weekend went pretty well as there was absolutely no mention of politics after this late night fire and beer session. The girlfriend told me that one of her uncles wouldn't even look at her now. How's that for a uniter, not a divider? Of course I was reluctant to bring up anything related out of respect for the girlfriend's parents, as well as the clogged face which was preventing me from thinking straight.
It seems that some people are just programmed with soundbytes propagated from every media appearance that every member of this administration has been privy to. Granted, they have never used terms like "turbanhead", though the general impression is that every terraist is a muslim, and we must smoke em' out of their caves.
This social neanderthal kind of attitude is exactly what makes THE dub who he is. He's decisive, he's determined, he's fighting the war on terra... but he's not too bright. The way I understand it is that THE dub had a C average at Yale and couldn't name the leaders of India or Pakistan just months before being appointed as President. He'd probably never been anywhere outside of Europe, Saudi Arabia, and the U.S. because friends of the family resided there.
I hate to say that there is a mass of social neanderthals out there. It seems, rather that some people, some very intelligent people, have been decieved, or misled, into thinking that THE dub's character somehow has, "well thought out", or, "intelligent, articulate individual" attached to it. Maybe that's why he seems so "down home", like corn and potatoes, and that's probably another reason to like him; he's like a teddy bear, or something... god it hurts to say that. But if you're like me, and you value strong intelligence in a president, then how could you want to vote for this guy? Go here for some well thought out, articulate statements from THE dub.
The direction of this post I guess was just to point out that there is a demographic of people (not just based on my experience over the weekend) who like this man because he's "taking care of business". He's going to take care of business alright, him and his determined friends, dick and karl and donny. But it's not going to be the business that people want, instead it will be a dramatic upheaval of the tax code, extremely conservative appointments to the Supreme court, and a push for a one-party state, as well as further imperialisation/democratisation to, and alienation from, the rest of the world.
