I have the somewhat unique perspective of having watched Michael Moore’s new movie this morning and then staying there to work as the doorman for the next three shows. I’ll try to stay away from bigger issues, since most people haven’t seen it yet, and I can’t help but think that this movie (for the majority) will only strengthen a person’s previous beliefs, not change them. In general I think it raised some good topics for debate or further thought, however I think it also uses psychological tactics among other things to try and dupe viewers. Who am I to say what is fact and what is not? I will say that I’d recommend seeing the film, if nothing else it’s at least more intellectually stimulating than White Chicks, Dodgeball, or The Chronicles of Riddick.
Before I drift any further, here are some things that you might not read on the hundreds of articles about the movie:
1) All four showings in this town did sell out today. On a bitter side note (which is in no way aimed at the host of this blog), the shows sold out close to their starting times. Several people bitched about not getting in, but had they shown up 20 minutes earlier they could have gotten a ticket and had their choice of any seat in the auditorium. Hmmm, maybe they showed up at the last minute because they took mass transit.
2) I had to check tickets, because people who weren’t able to buy one were trying to go in anyway. Even though I was checking to make sure that no customer who paid would go without a seat, it amazes me at how many rude comments and noises I got (typical).
3) Two local radio stations ran editorials claiming our theater wouldn’t carry the film, even though all of the managers and the head office say the never received an inquiry as to whether or not we would. Several customers had aggressively questioned me on whether or not we would show Fahrenheit 9/11, and it seemed almost as if they were hoping we wouldn’t, so that they could be outraged. This morning, protesters were out and ready in front of the theater, even though it was posted in the local newspaper that the first show would be at 12:45.
4) I’m trying not to give my opinions on specific parts of the movie, but I’d like to mention one that I thought was interesting and probably won’t get much attention. There is a part where Brittany Spears endorses the President and the audience laughed; later US troops are shown as being kill happy and they spend a bit of time talking about music. Some troops are shown saying how they can plug headphones into their Bradley Fighting Vehicle, and that they like to get amped up, or put into the right mindset by listening to Drowning Pool’s “Let the Bodies Hit the Floor” and the metal song that goes “the roof, the roof is on fire, we don’t need no water let the motherfucker burn, burn motherfucker, burn!”. It also shows a soldier holding up on Ozzfest CD. It was only a brief and somewhat unmentioned message, but it struck me as funny that my friends sitting next to me found this part uncalled for, and they had an uncomfortable look of annoyance at it.
At any rate, these are just some random notes for thought, and I should mention that the film got applause at the end of all four shows.
